This includes a direct examination of the retina and optic nerve using a handheld ophthalmoscope, a check of your vision clarity, pupil reactions, eye movements and the nerves controlling them, an external examination of the eyes, a screening of your peripheral vision, and a structured review of your symptoms and any family history of conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration.
The back of the eye is the one place in the body where blood vessels can be examined directly β meaning early signs of wider health issues such as raised blood pressure or diabetes can show up here, often before you'd notice any change in your sight.
